I have never, ever done this before. In fact, I usually laugh at people who take their time to call up a talk show early in the morning. My only radio experience was when I sang "Yarada nee balagane" as "Kutty K.Priya" in Paapa Malar (Kid's show) in AIR, Chennai. This was when I was 7 years old.

Due to some weird impulse, I called the 'Kathy-Judy show' on WGN Radio this morning on the way to work. The producer took my call! and put me on hold when the rest of the show was going on. I was calculating what to say. This was actually important because if the hosts find your personality interesting, they keep asking more questions. After about 6 minutes 22 seconds of wait, my line was cut off. Iam not sure if it just happened due to weak signal, or the producer found my story uninteresting and let me go.

A sudden impulse but woke me up properly. I shudder to think that I was a few seconds away from joining the crowd who say some stupid experience! Eeks!!

I agree mainframe is older than dinosaurs and is not the coolest platform to be working on. But, what I can't bear is when some of these so-called J2EE cool guys being assigned a mainframe project (bcos of lack of J2EE projects) and they treating the place like its junk.

They have the appearance of a billionaire who is stranded in a poor pub (or who has to eat in a kaiyendi bhavan) and looks at people / work like they are sub-inferior. The recent guy in our team is no different. I was assigning him some work and was asking him if he remembered MF basics. He put on the grummiest look on his face. He talked about getting out of mainframe project and into a Java project, as if he were living in the slums and with his hardwork and perseverance got a degree etc. Then, he said he is now on Prozac because he is depressed seeing a black background screen with an option of just few colors as foreground and of course, having to use the keyboard instead of a mouse.

Oh please , I thought. Does he even know that I have been working on mainframe all my life? And have never written a single program in Java (other than "Hello world") but still am getting my three times a day?

Anyway, that was enough for me to give up on the idea of writing a really funny post and start this one!

CC of Selective Amnesia has a new web address! After almost 2 weeks, I updated my blogroll with the new address and visited him when I got a pleasant surprise!! Alpha is back. I couldnt wait to get to her blog (The PG Wodehouse and Marslow stories on SA had to wait!) and she is back with a BANG!!

Her posts about Kyon Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi - Par Bhool Gayi bring back old memories of her writings. Welcome back and keep them coming, Alpha!

Update on 6/23/2004:

About the new Selective Amnesia, he has certainly added lot of new elements like categorization etc. (I would want to take a short course on blogging effectively after August. My blog seems to be the most primitive one in history!)

There are some more changes:

Lazy Geek has a guest blogger - Mr. Anand C. and together, they are giving free tips to Indian movie makers.

Teakada has taken a whole new look and is actually talking a lot more than movies. I think the content justifies the title of the blog now!

Iam still making rounds on my other favorite blogs and will be back with updates sooner than later.

More updates - 6/23/2004 3:30PM CDT

Just visited Anand's (mdeii) blog! The background is just great!

Aayitha Ezhuthu - My take

Basis of story : Some people are born good and selfless; some change to the state; some cannot. Deweeding does not beautify the garden, you need to sow new and good seeds for that. Not all sentences in life end with a period (full-stop).

Pluses :

Manirathnam - Doesnt need any special appreciation. Has proved he is one of the best once again.

AR Rahman - Cannot compare with Roja/Bombay etc. because the use of music in this movie is so completely different from the other movies. A slightly comparable movie is Kannathil Muthamittal. The music is successful in accentuating the tone of the movie and I think that was what it was meant to do.

Madhavan - With all the faults in his Chennai dialect, Madhavan still stands out in his performance. Of course, his character is the most meaty one in the movie. I also think part of his bad accent could have been solved with the conventional dubbing instead of the digital one.

Meera Jasmine - Proves to be a perfect fit for the role and justifies the character.

Surya / Sidharth - Both prove tailored to their roles and have done a good job.

According to me, this is the most realistic of all Manirathnam's movies! Yes, it is commercial, but the events seem more life-like not just relative to Manirathnam movies but relative to Tamil cinema / Indian cinema. Some examples -

A wife does not succeed all the time in being her husband's moral saviour, and if she does not, it does not entitle her to kill him.

A movie villain need not necessarily be a master-minded criminal with evil laughter.

Good triumphing over evil need not necessarily involve the anti-hero falling to his knees begging pardon or the villain being dragged by the common public throughout the streets and being killed.

Life is not about differentiating good from the bad, but about overpowering evil with good.

The villain is not one or two characters and the solution is not in killing these people. The cure is to spread good to curtail evil because it is not possible to kill it all the time.

Bharathiraja: This role to Bharathiraja is like a 12th std exam for a 12th std teacher. He does his part very convincingly.

The lady who acts as Sriman's wife does a great job! Especially the scene when she fights with Madhavan after the abortion.

Minuses:

Characterization: Like I mentioned before, only Madhavan's and Meera Jasmine's characters have been worked out in fine detail. Others including Surya's could have been etched out better.

Esha Deol: She has a long way to go before acting in MR's movie. Some of the problem might be the language, because her dialogue delivery and expressions seem to have a lag in them. This role, if done by a more talented actress would have complemented Michael's role beautifully and would have equalled Madhavan / Meera Jasmine duo. Surya seems to have put extra effort into the romantic scenes to make it more effective and does sometime stands out a bit!

So, people, in short, loved the movie and is a must-see even if you are not a MR fan!!

Back after 2 weeks of intense work, study and stress. Iam relieved that I can atlast see some light at the end of the tunnel (my MBA). But the question is what will I find at the end of the tunnel? Will it be a scorching desert or a bright garden, God knows. Anyways, for now, am just happy to be spending another 10 days of freedom before starting my final quarter. Have the commencement ceremony next week where I will be given a dummy certificate and will be photographed with a cap and gown. This will be my cap and gown ceremony. Students in India are too cool to actually attend the commencement ceremony, unless they receive a gold medal. Atleast my friends and I didn't. I have always wanted to go to a convocation, come out, throw the certificate high up in the air and then sing "Vidiya vidiya nadanam" or "Jagada jagada jagada", as the case may be! I have the opportunity now, but maybe too old to do that and am sure my mother will not approve of it.

Looking back at the past 2 weeks, its been a roller-coaster. Especially in the personal front. My father was to arrive on Wednesday and suddenly took ill the day before he was to start. The story is incredible. He went for a routine physical and took a GTD test for glucose level. Here , they give the patient several rounds of glucose drinks and measure their blood glucose levels. It so happens that people above 55 should not take this kind of test as it increases their cholesterol level. This is exactly what happened to my father. I dont know what the lab guy was thinking! Of course, cannot blame anybody in India! But, by God's grace, he is out of the hospital now, but will be missing my graduation ceremony. These are a few techniques God adopts to let men go of their intense attachments, but we never learn.

Its amazing how I can change overnight from this hardly-seen-mom-cum-wife to the most devoted one. I have already started planning the specials for the weekend and will be shopping for them on the way home. I have tried to put together a menu of my husband's likings without much fat and pizza for my daughter (yup, homemade!).

I have never intended to make this blog my journal, but I guess Iam just blurting this stuff out as I think. Sorry if I have bored you. Will be back with something more meaningful next time.

Time: 3 AM. Date: Early '90s. Place: Mylapore, Chennai, India. A lower middle class family house with no separate rooms for each person. What is talked in the next room can be easily heard in another room. There is this peaceful, sometimes eerie silence. The head of the family is the father. He suddenly wakes up to a crackling noise (something like coins falling on the floor). He gets up thinking its a dream. Once awake, he listens harder and recognizes the laughter of a young girl. He is suddenly reminded of the suicide of a 16-yr old girl in the neighbourhood the previous yr, but puts away the thought. As the noise gets louder, his wife gets up. She is frightened. She gets up to go find out the source. The chivalrous husband asks her to stay put while he goes to investigate. He tries not to wake his son up who is sleeping in the hall and reaches the bedroom from where the voice is heard. He sees his daughter, whom he loves so dearly sitting up on her bed laughing heartily. The object in her hand is a P.G.Wodehouse novel titled "Thank you, Jeeves".

(Change of scene)

Time: 3 PM. Date: May 28, 2004. Place: A stage agency in Chicago, IT department. Most of the building is empty owing to the long weekend. People usually leave early except a few handful of consultants, who have to complete their 8 hours, rain or shine, tornado or snow storm. Due to emptiness, even small noises reverberate across the entire floor. All that is heard are keyboards, mouse clicks, loud phone rings and then whispering conversations that follow. The man who is leaning back and enjoying an Indian newspaper on the web heard a crackling noise (something like coins falling on the floor). He thinks somebody must have dropped their wallet/purse in a hurry. But, it repeats again, this time he recognizes it to be the laughter of a young girl. He has heard of the building having been haunted, but has never experienced it first-hand. He makes sure the security guard is in place if he needs help. He find the source of the laughter and gets to the cube of the young woman (!!) laughing to herself! The object in fron of her screen was the following website: Domain Maximus. Yup, the same guy who wrote about Travails of a South Indian guy. This time he writes about his school/college days and how different songs remind him of different circumstances.

P.S: Hey, forgot I did the same thing to one of good, old Alpha's posts as well. About her visiting a college mate and the call of nature!!

Laugh and enjoy and have a great weekend , India and a great long weekend, US of A!

Shrek 2

It was a big relief to watch a movie on the second day after its release! I have been living on DVD releases for more than a year now!! And, here goes my take on it.

I loved "Shrek" just like millions of other fans. It changed the image that mainstream summer animated movies were only for kids. It said that fairy tales is not just about feeling good , but about feeling good about being oneself. It said that you can find love in the most unlikely places. Most of all, it appealed to the ogre in each one of us. By being an ogre, its not just outward beauty, but any weakness you might have and we deserve better if we are true to ourselves!

Content-wise "Shrek 2" was a let down. I know it is the general notion that the sequels always are a bit disadvantageous to the writer because they do not have the luxury of the surprise in characters any more. I couldnt disagree more. I think a good story-writer can bring out an entirely different spin on the same set of characters. I liked "Matrix 2" more than "Matrix" and even "Mummy returns" as much as "Mummy".

Once you prepare yourself for the sequel phenomena, "Shrek 2" is a very good entertainer. It goes more along a spontaneous comedy than witty humour. Cameron Diaz has not much scope in this one, and even Mike Myers is pushed to the back by the Eddie Murphy & Anthonio Banderes combo. One great thing was the length of the movie. Its just 90 minutes and the director holds your attention successfully for the full length.

Good Entertainer!! Enjoy!!

Manirathnam & Analytical CRM

I thought of keeping off this post until after I see the movie, but am tempted to put this in after the different reviews I read. While there is no doubt about Mani being a creative director, my thoughts went to if the new movie was a good product for his fans (read profitable customers)?

So, I thought I will draw a common demographic of a typical Mani fan (Iam just writing as I think , so might miss a point here or there!) :

Age group: 23 - 40. ( I think people should have atleast been in the age group 8 - 22 when his early movies were released. Anybody who joined the crowd after Roja, I wouldn't term as ardent).

Characterestics: Good maturity to recognize and accept different movie making styles. (I dont think maturity has anything to do with education so did not put that in as a factor).

Background: From 'B' / 'C' centers (Bcos his movies usually strike a urban cord rather than rural ones and people in very ruralized areas may not understand the nuances of city living as well. Of course, Roja , Thiruda Thiruda are exceptions in this regard.)

Aitha Ezhuthu performs well in each of the above criteria.

Story: It talks about the life of 3 youngsters from 3 different strate of society. The story is about social/political awareness and students - always a passion for young people.

Cast: It has 3 successful stars in the 3 key roles, along with 3 talented heroines (yet to see how much talent is actually required for their roles). Star selection is where Manirathnam stands apart. While there might be questions about how well Madhavan is suited for his role, I think what MR was looking for was freshness in his actors. And Bharathiraja! Just like Bharathiraja brought out Manivannan in Kodi Parakudu (OK, wrong choice of movie, I accept!!), its MR's turn to bring out Bharathiraja.

Direction: I asked one of my colleagues who saw "Aitha Ezhuthu" yesterday about his view on the movie. He said that seeing the movie was like reading a novel. Starting with a twisted knot and then unveiling the different branches of the thread to untie the knot. This, I think, is what a common man (one who does not know about Mexican, Japanese and Russian movies) looks for. A change in expressing a story. Mani has tried this at many levels right from Mouna Ragam and this is yet another one of his such experiments.

But, all that I tried to express here is that Mani knows the pulse of his audience and he provides accordingly. He has been doing this ever since 1986 and continues to do the same with "Aitha Ezhuthu".
P.S: I have not watched the movie and I am sure there will be experiences that negate or affirm my above views. I will come up with updates later.
Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code
I think it would be an understatement to talk about Da Vinci Code as just a mystery thriller. Yes, it is and the author does a pretty good job in mixing blood & suspense with literature, art and cryptology. The language is entertaining and the flow gripping from the beginning till the end. If being 59 weeks on the NY bestseller list is an achievement, it has also dragged in its preceding novel starring the same protogonist into the list as well.

But, the book has done more than just remaining in the bestseller list. It has started a huge controversy which has forced churches to hold special sermons and classes explaining the facts behind the book. Many anti-Davinci-code books have cropped up written mainly by the people of the church. Stories about how the church branded non-believers as heretics and prosecuted them in the pre-Renaissance period is not uncommon. Even the life of Jesus and the secret of the hidden Gospels has been brought to Scrutiny by media. But, Dan Brown has been successful in bringing all this up at such a turbulant period for the Church.
The author's success does not lie in him proving or disproving facts but in the fact that he has kindled curiosity in the public. What this curiosity will reveal or what questions will be answered is for time to decide.

As the main character of the novel, Robert Langdon, points out - Religion is not about historical facts. Even the firm believers of a religion realize that the stories told by it are metaphors. Religion is about the trust and belief of each individual.

What is more the author actually says that he left the most controversial part from the book! Some 3 or 4 centuries from now, somebody is going to discover the remains of Dan Brown's PC and will be astounded by the discovery of this hidden book and will write a book called "The Dan Brown Code"!
Humility
Everytime I take enormous pride about something I have done, God taps me on the head and says, 'Dont go over board here, there are people who have achieved more than you'!

In the recent days, when people praise me for my perseverence in doing MBA, working and taking care of my daughter, I give a small humble(!?) smile and then start my thanksgiving speech about my husband, mother-in-law, mother who have been of great help. But, deep within, I feel this pride rise to my head and I start thinking, why of course, Iam suffering but still able to make it! This feeling came to a tumbling crash yesterday. My classmate in Kellogg was talking about her MBA experience. She started MBA when her husband was completing his. In the first few quarters, they chose classes to complement each other so they could take care of their first child and the second one was on its way. Her parents are here but will be leaving in June and then she and her husband will be left with the kids. She has 12 more courses to complete which is a year and a half more of classes. She is also on a high profile project in her company and has tight deadlines for the next year and a half (I know this for a fact, 'cos my husband is her colleague).

So, next time I put on that fake humility and answer someone, I will be reminded of something like this and will really be humble!!

Update: Just after I had published this, I read David St.Lawrence's comment on my blog. It really made my day. I was trying to get in my review of Da Vinci Code for the past 3 days and couldn't come up with anything I liked. I was thinking this morning, if maintaining this blog was just a futile exercise wasting my time and others' and I see this. God just does not humble my pride, but also revives my self-confidence when I least expect it! Thanks, David!
The upset by Hindu
The editorial by Hindu on Friday: The Meaning of Verdict 2004 is the most diluted editorial I have seen, even on basic newspaper standards. This kind of an editorial from a magazine as experienced as Hindu and as crucial as a time like this, is very disappointing. Granted The Hindu has always been a very passive, neutral (I don't think that is true anymore) newspaper of the bunch, atleast the editorials have been something to look forward to in previous years. But in this particular piece, the editor spends 2/3 of the space just summarizing the election results and in the last paragraph, understates every sentence even the POTA part , where they should have been more emphatic!

While discussing this with a friend, he just said, "Thats a given and what more do you expect from The Hindu" and above all, he is an ardent reader of the same. So, people no longer expect anything ground breaking from it anymore! Quite a low standard for such an experienced newspare, I would think!

Million Dollar question?

Does anybody know why blogrolling would recognize updates being made only for some blogs? Out of my list of blog rolls, I find the bottom 20 or so never being shown as updated. I have chosen the option to sort it by most recently updated and it irritates me at times to go read all the blogs, just in case I miss something!

Google search

There was somebody who actually googled on "aishwarya wrinkles" and of course, landed on my blog 'cos of my review of Khakhi!

Achievement!

We have completed 10 days without any kind of TV, not even basic channels. Of course, we watched countless recordings of Simpsons & Tintin, yet I think its something to be proud of!

"Why does someone have to die". "Someone has to die so that the others value life more". This is the whole crux of the movie. I know that Iam late to comment on the movie by a couple of years. Nevertheless, I would hate passing on this one. A wonderful movie! Great characterizations!

While Nicole Kidman's performance has already been glorified by an Oscar (a very worthy one) and Julianne Moore did a wonderful job in showing a depressed personality, here is something that I found about Meryl Streep. Her performance shows her experience and her skill at expressing herself without explicit emotions on the face. The scene is where Laura Brown and Claressa Vaughn sit and discuss on Laura Brown abandoning her children. The central character in the scene is Laura Brown - Julianne Moore, when she tries to explain her life and that of her son, Richard. But, without even a single dialogue, Meryl Streep shows a wide range of emotions so easily (with as little movement of the eye lids ) from disdain, contempt, curiosity and at last, peace with the lady and the world. That was the trademark of a gifted and talented artist. Its like Sachin Tendulkar hitting a sixer with a small frame with ease that puts everybody in awe!

Trailer of "The Village"
Did anybody watch the trailer for "The Village" (Night Shyamalan's next movie) last night when ABC aired Sixth Sense? I missed it but when I read about it on imdb, I am curious , more than ever to watch the movie! Yes, the plots different but it has Adrian Brody ("The Pianist" fame) in the cast, also Joaquin Phoenix. The story is set in Pennsylvania (like Shyamalan's other movies) and is a period piece dated 1894.

When in IMDB, I was clicking on links to Joaquin Phoenix. Suprised to see he was born in 1974 (anybody in that vicinity I consider as young, for obvious reasons!). He is a vegan and lives in the same apartment building as his best friend, Casey Affleck and sister, Summer Phoenix. All his siblings are actors. Summer Phoenix is Casey Affleck's girl friend and is a vegetarian. Casey Affleck is Ben Affleck's brother and is a vegan! I love learning such meaningless stuff in life! Don't you?

Movies
Watched "Lost in Translation" and "Timeline" last week.

Loved "Lost in Translation". A very-well taken movie and am looking forward to Sophia Coppola's next movie. The movie, itself, translates the boredom of the two main characters excellently into a movie. Worth the Oscar for original screenplay. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanson have done due credit to their characters, though Iam not sure if Bill Murray's performance was Oscar-worthy. Was I imagining or does Scarlett Johanson actually resemble Sri Priya (the yesteryear star) in some shots?

Something that I noticed: Both the characters - Bill Harris and Charlotte are both similar to each other's spouses. I mean, Bill Harris is an artist who travels a lot for his job and is not able to devote enough time for his family (just like Charlotte's husband). Charlotte is a self-searching girl who needs company and of course, a self-identity. I think Bill's wife might have been in this same place years back, which is why she is now obsessed with the maintenance of her family and house. It gives her a channel for her time and an identity she couldnt find when travelling with her husband.

Timeline: A good example of how an adapted movie should not be. A movie adapted from a novel should carry the essence of the novel. "Timeline" as a movie fails miserably in this regard. The essence of the novel is two-fold. First, it has the relativity of time explained (refer to Ravages' post on the same) and second, it shows the culture of 14th century Europe and the struggle of these 20th century people to survive there. The novel concentrated on Andre Mareck as the main character, because he knew how to survive in that world, while the movie has Chris Johnston as the lead (just bcos its played by Paul Walker).

P.S: Could not find the link to Ravage's post about Timeline and the relativity theory.

Respect for blogging!
During our EVC team discussion last weekend, I accidentally mentioned about my blogging. Accidentally because, nobody known to me except my husband knows about this. One of the girls asked what a blog is. By the time I could come with an explanation, this guy put on a smirk on his face, and said "its a digitial diary/journal" and asked me for my blogname. I said its not my "diary" but more of my commentary on various things, and he gave me one more of those smiles. I guess this guy thinks that blogs are some intimate diary that we leave for everybody else to read! I think he has not yet been to any meaningful blogs in his life! Thought of giving him a speech on that, but contained myself.

Sundry notes
Ok, not that any thing I write is really that important, still as I have not updated my blog for a while (regularly), these are some interesting things I came across.

First, Nilu's question about Matrix review. Why a review after all the hungama has cooled down? As parents of a 16-month old, we do not have the luxury of going to the theatres for all the movies. We categorize the movies by our interest for them and also the review. It falls in 5 categories: movies that have to be watched in the first few weeks when it is released in the theatre, movies that can be watched after the hungama has died down but in the theatres, movies that have to be watched as soon as the DVD is released (2-day rental), movies that can be watched after they become a week rental and then those movies that are left to the cable. So, Matrix Revolutions got down from the second category to the third category 'cos of our vacation. (OK, next time before Nilu asks a question, he is going to think for a very long time!!). And I have some more 2 cents (actually, 1 or 1.5 cents) about movies that we have watched in our recent weekend sprees. Every Friday and Saturday, my husband and I sneak to the family room after my daughter is asleep, fetch some snacks to eat and settle on the two-seat recliner to indulge ourselves in our most passionate common hobby!

In my 'Technology Finance' class of this quarter, there are totally 11 students. We divided ourselves by our geagraphic location for group assignments. The 5 of us in the suburbs are all from IT, all Indians and interestingly, all Tamilians. But, we only speak pure Englipichu in our meetings/calls. There is this girl, who sometimes says"No re", and then regains her composure and starts with her American-accented English. So, what Iam planning to do in the next meeting is to catch these guys unaware with some Tamil sentence. I hope they dont banish from the group for doing this, but they seem to be quite jolly folks!

When Iam terribly frustrated, I usually think nothing in this world is of any use. Everything is replaceable and hence not as important as we think. Iam usually reminded of Cho's dialogue in his serial which was a remake of "Talk of two cities" (shucks, forget the name now).. When asked why he drinks he asks, why should I not drink, what if my health is spoilt and goes on to say "no man is indispensable" and so on. While during extremely frustrating times, I feel this way, my actual belief is quite the contrary. I think every creature created on this earth is for a purpose and is part of a big technical design which we are not aware of. Even the one single ant that carries food to its ant hill and contributes its small portion, helps build and maintain the ant community and in someway, helps balance the nature. I hope, the next time, Iam terribly frustrated and think this way, I can tell myself that no, everything is important in its own way in this world.. Lets see..

Meanwhile, you all have a great weekend ahead...

Matrix and the Vedas
Maybe all of you noticed this, but I was surprised when "The Matrix Revolutions" ended with the score with lyrics from Vedas - "Asatho maa sath gamaya; Tamaso Maa Jyothir gamaya". Where there is evil, let there be good; where there is darkness, let there be light! Reminded me of Bharani's brother's guestblog!

All the reviews proved right about the movie. The Wachowski brothers should have known what the market expects of them and should have stayed in their niché area. They should have added a higher dosage of philosophy. But, of course, it was interesting to notice the Karma talk by Sati's father and the girl was cute.

Thus, the trilogy ended...
